John and Claire's Sailing Trip 2005 |
|
Introduction This is the story of the Larson family vacation to the Apostle Islands, Saturday, July 2 to Friday, July 8. The family included John and Claire (mom and dad) and the kids, Linnea, Anders and Annelise (4.5 years, 2.5 years and 8 months old). We lived on board Nordic Song, a Pearson 33-2, a 33 foot glorious sailboat. This was our first family cruise. The story started with driving from Northfield up to Bayfield late Saturday night. We arrived at the marina ~10PM and were in bed by midnight. The first morning was not particularly good. I burnt some caramel roles to a crisp in the oven, while the kids woke up and were stuck in the aft stateroom. Upon inspection of the situation, my first thought was that I would have to saw a hole big enough for them to crawl through the stateroom door. The door was neither locked nor jammed. The door handle was messed up and jammed and would not turn. I tried reaching through the ceiling hatch, which happened to be open, but I couldn’t reach the door knob. When I did reach the door knob with a wrench, I made no progress. Then Anders started going ballistic on the door knob and I saw it move a little. I said, “Anders – do that some more!” and what do you know, it broke free and the door opened! Thanks goodness for testosterone-ladden 2 ˝ year old boys! The door knob set screw was loose and when I tightened that, all was good. Needless to say, the kids quickly scampered out of the stateroom. Linnea thought she would be trapped in there forever. Then, the water heater was not working. This after Dave and Bruce had no trouble with it. What the heck? I was convinced that I was cursed or that they were lying to me. Turned out that following the water heater manual instructions very carefully regarding resetting it, that it worked after I reset it. Not sure why I had to hit the reset button. Now it is ~10AM on our first day, and although the caramel rolls were pretty bad, the other problems were solved and we carried on with our adventure. The following is not a chronological summary but a summary by “time”, if that makes sense. In general, upon reflection of our time on the boat, it was a glorious week, never to be forgotten… To read about our family trip go to the following chapters. Wallpaper for your computer.
