Bayfield Apple Festival
October 2-5, 2008:

Picture set 1:

After arriving late Friday night, we awoke Saturday morning to the Pipes and Drums "Wake up concert" at Port Superior.  Pipes and Drums is a bagpipe group out of Thunder Bay Canada .  Fortunately, the wakeup call was 10AM, so plenty of sleep-in time.  These guys and gals were great playing a variety of tunes which included some folk Irish dancing and the ever-stirring Amazing Grace.  It was a beautiful morning and it was a great way to kick off the day.

Immediately following Pipes and Drums, we walked into Bayfield from Port Superior on the Brownstone Trail.  It's a spectacular hike through the woods and along the shore, with many beautiful overlooks of Lake Superior .  If you time it right you can even stop at the spectacular Wild Rice restaurant for drinks at around 6pm, or if you call 9 months in advance (I’m semi-serious), you could have a great dinner.  Wild Rice is a short diversion of a few hundred feet off the main Brownstone Trail.

When in Bayfield during Apple Fest, expect crowds – big crowds.  After all, it is considered one of the “Top 10 Autumn Festivals in North America ” according to the Society of American Travel Writers.  If you are looking for oranges, kiwis, bananas, or pineapple – this is not the festival for you.  But Apples … oh yeah.   They are everywhere.  We’re talking Apple Brats.  Apple beer.  Apple wine.  Apple tortillas.  Caramel apples.  Apple Chili.  Apple dumpling.  Apple Pie.  Apple Cider.  And pretty much anything else that can be done with apples – it’s there.  There also is a nice art fair, and a ride fair for the little ones.  It is quite the event.  If you like apples, this is a great place to be.  Well, after a 3 mile hike into town, 4 hours on our feet at Apple Fest, and 3 mile hike home to Nordic Song at Port Superior, the rest of our evening was spent crashing and relaxing.  A great experience over all.

Picture set 4:

We awoke to a dense fog in the marina – a stark contrast to the bright blue sky of the previous morning - as if someone was telling us summer was now officially over.
