Subject:MN State Law Change in Regard to Insurance Benefits

All District Staff.

On May 14, 2013 Governor Mark Dayton signed the same-sex marriage bill into law. On August 1, 2013 this law took effect and recognized same-sex civil marriage entered into on and after that date in Minnesota, as well as same-sex marriages validly entered into in other states. Minnesota joins eleven others and Washington D.C. in recognizing same-sex marriages.

Same-sex couples who are legally married under state law will be entitled to equal treatment under federal law in respect to federal benefits and will be eligible for federal benefits in the same manner as other spouses.

Effective August 1, 2013 you are able to enroll your legally married same-sex spouse into your employer-provided health coverage. To elect this benefit status change, please complete the attached member change form within 30 days of today, August 16, 2013, if your legal marriage took place after August 1, 2013, or by September 16, 2013, if legally married prior to August 1, 2013.

Please call 763-689-6202 if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Robyn Vosberg-Torgerson
Director of Finance & Operations
